Summary

It’s important to note when I've visited a restaurant several times before officially reviewing it on this platform. My passion for food and drink isn't a recent discovery, and I've certainly done my rounds to many places in New York. Naturally, a larger sample size offers a more accurate rating. While this can be a double-edged sword for some establishments, it isn’t the case for Cote. Any potential hiccups one might anticipate from multiple visits are entirely overshadowed by the overwhelmingly positive experiences I’ve had at Cote. Delivering consistently high quality, Cote stands out in the New York City dining world and is one of the few restaurants that truly meets its well-deserved acclaim.

Food & Beverage

Cote offers guests three culinary experiences: the Steak Omakase, Butcher’s Feast, and à la carte. If it’s your first time at Cote and you’e in a smaller party with some extra cash to spend, the Steak Omakase provides a truly unique experience. However, as I’ve returned multiple times, I’ve become a fan of the Butcher’s Feast. Priced at $68 per person, it might offer one of the best values in all of Manhattan. Not only do you receive various cuts of rich, flavorful, tender meat, but you also get more sides than one can feasibly consume in a single meal. If you’re feeling ambitious, consider adding a supplement of A5 wagyu or even an additional Cote steak. Other standout appetizers include the Steak & Eggs and Tuna Tartare.

On the beverage front, Cote boasts a strong selection of house cocktails and an impressive wine list. Given the amount of meat you’ll be enjoying, a robust red wine is the recommended choice. For something unique, request a glass of Madeira to accompany the marinated short rib cut (a tip from sommelier Ian).

Overall, if you opt for the Butcher’s Feast or à la carte, indulge in extra appetizers or add-ons, and enjoy a drink with some fine wine, you can anticipate spending over $100 per person, including tip. Among the many restaurants in Tier Two, this is entirely reasonable for the quality of food and drink you'll enjoy.

Service

To achieve a service level higher than 90, you need an x-factor. Often, this entails the staff’s desire to forge intimate relationships with their guests. For a restaurant like Cote, this can be challenging. Not only is it an expensive dining option, but its genre of food isn’t something you would, or should, consume very frequently. The restaurant’s lively, high-tempo atmosphere also presents barriers. However, Cote’s service is exemplary. You can expect to have both a primary server and a sommelier at your disposal. Every staff member I’ve encountered has been consistently sharp and attentive. Beyond your primary duo, several other servers will attend to you to clear plates, cook meat, replace the grill, and more. The staff isn’t just diligent in their service; Cote excels in pacing your meal. This factor is pivotal in any restaurant’s service rating, and it's particularly commendable for Cote to maintain such finesse in a bustling social environment.

Atmosphere

Few restaurants match Cote in aesthetics and social appeal. With its clean lines, dark tones, beautiful marble, ambient lighting, and central bar, every detail contributes to its allure. Don’t overlook the pleasure of the journey downstairs to the restroom either (just be careful of the steps if you’re on your third bottle of wine…). Cote’s ambiance sets the stage for your dining experience even before you glance at the menu, and that speaks volumes.

Vibe

If you couldn’t tell by now, I love Cote. And when this place gets going, it gets going. But what’s also nice is if you catch an early sitting, you’ll be walking out the door when the ruckus first begins. Although, having been fortunate to secure a 7:30 reservation on both Fridays and Saturdays with friends, I’d argue it's an experience not to be missed.

Cote stands out as one of the most vibrant restaurants in the city, excelling in food, drink, service, and atmosphere, firmly placing it at the pinnacle of Tier Two.
