Summary

New York City’s vast skyline might be familiar to those born and raised in the metropolitan area, yet its view never ceases to amaze. This is my feeling every time I visit Overstory in the beautiful, Gatsby-esque 70 Pine Street skyscraper. Overstory, located on the 64th floor of the building, completes the trifecta of high dining located in the building, serving alongside both Crown Shy and SAGA. Yet, despite the highly Instagrammable atmosphere and cocktail presentation, Overstory maintains an exceptional level of quality befitting its location and neighbors. This isn’t just another “rooftop bar.” Overstory stands as one of the world’s premier cocktail bars and lounges, while also boasting one of the most spectacular views in all of Manhattan.

Food & Beverage

Elegance and attention to detail define Overstory’s menu. Consequently, the pricing reflects this high standard. Expect to spend around $24 per drink and more for the food. Overstory’s menu excites with its commitment to seasonality while still including signature fan favorites like the Terroir Old Fashioned, Easy Money, and In The Clouds throughout the year. The drinks are purposeful and balanced, described simply despite their inherent complexity. Regarding bites, the popcorn and the olives/nuts mix are must-haves, even if you plan to try other items.

Service

They do their job well, but there's a level of personality and connection I have yet to experience at Overstory throughout my many visits. In all fairness, the space and vibe don’t necessarily foster socialization, but regardless, the effort to connect with guests is not particularly noticeable. While this is certainly not a deal-breaker, acknowledging this aspect is more about praising places that go above and beyond in the service department, rather than disparaging those that do not.

Atmosphere

There are few (if any) cocktail bars and lounges in New York City that can compete with Overstory’s atmosphere. Part of this is due to the view, as discussed, but it’s also reflected in the interior. Whether you sit around the perimeter or have the privilege of sitting at the bar, you will be treated to an almost therapeutic visual experience. This experience is complemented by pink velvet seats, soft yellow lighting, and a shiny disco ball. Certainly one of the classiest bars in Manhattan, the combination of architecture, interior design, music, and view places Overstory’s atmosphere among the very top ranks of Tier 1.

Vibe

Overstory attracts a mixed clientele. On one end, there are food and beverage enthusiasts who appreciate its quality and execution, and on the other, there are those drawn by the view and elegant allure. This mix isn’t necessarily bad; it just means that the vibe has been inconsistent across my various visits. Since clientele obviously influences an establishment’s ambiance, on good nights, it’s lively, but on off nights, it can be somewhat dull. That said, in my own experiences with the people I’ve gone with, I’ve always had a wonderful time. For that reason, I would say the overall vibe has been very strong.
